macOS Catalina Support Status Update

  • Author: David Ng

  • Date:

WHAT’S HAPPENING: UCSF IT has verified compatibility with standard UCSF applications and macOS 10.15 (Catalina).  IT Field Services will officially support macOS 10.15 in addition to macOS 10.14 (Mojave), effective immediately.  macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) is now officially under containment at UCSF, meaning it will still be supported on existing Macs while Apple continues to release security updates but no Macs will be re-imaged with macOS 10.13 (High Sierra).

Users of macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or older are strongly recommended to upgrade their macOS to a newer version or replace their old Macs with a brand new computer as software manufacturers will eventually discontinue support for macOS High Sierra.

We are sincerely grateful for everyone's patience while UCSF IT was testing in-place upgrade to macOS Catalina from macOS 10.10.5 through 10.14.6 within Desktop Engineering lab to ensure the process is free of major problems.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

  • Please be advised that 32-bit applications will not run on macOS Catalina.  See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208436 for more details about that.
  • If you are unsure about how macOS Catalina will affect your Mac, please contact your departmental IT support or IT Service Desk at 415-514-4100 for further guidance
  • If you are supported by ITFS or other IT support at UCSF, please see this wiki for upgrade instructions: https://wiki.library.ucsf.edu/x/dDzPHQ (MyAccess login required)
  • If you do not have any UCSF IT support or would like to perform the upgrade yourself on your personal Mac, please see this wiki: https://wiki.library.ucsf.edu/x/nSnPHQ (MyAccess login required)
