Subscribing to Listserv

To subscribe to a Listserv, send a one line email message from the address that you want added to the subscription list.*

  • In the To field, enter: [email protected];
  • Leave the Subject field blank;
  • In the body on the message, enter: subscribe listname firstname lastname;
    where listname is the name of the Listserv you want to subscribe to and firstname lastname are your first and last name.

    The system captures your email address from the FROM field of your message.

Once you have sent your subscription request to the Listserv server, you will get one of three of responses.

  • For 'Open,Confirm' Listservs, which allows subscribers to join the Listserv at their own discretion, you will receive a confirmation request email to confirm your intention to subscribe to the listserv.  Upon confirming your subscription, you will receive a 'welcome' or 'acceptance' message stating that your subscription request has been accepted.
  • For 'By_Owner' Listservs, which allows the Listserv owner to review and process subscription requests, you will receive a notice that your subscription request has been forwarded to the list owner.
  • For 'Closed' Listervs, which do not allow subscribers to self-subscribe, you will receive a notice that the Listserv is closed.  If you wish to pursue subscribing to a 'Closed' Listserv, then you may attempt to contact the Listserv owner by sending an email to: listname[email protected].

* These instructions do NOT apply to subscribing to the administrative role-based or building listservs. Membership in the administrative listservs is based on information stored in the Campus Locator Service.

Unsubscribing from Listserv

There are two ways to unsubscribe from a Listserv:

  • Use the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the message
    This function is only available on 'at-will' listservs, you cannot unsubscribe from 'role-baesd' listservs
  • Send a one line email message from the address that you want removed from the subscription list.
    • In the body on the message, enter: signoff listname
      where listname is the name of the Listserv from which you want to unsubscribe.
    The system captures your email address from the FROM field of your message.
NOTE: This command will only work when sent from the email address that you want removed from the subscription list. If the email address is no longer accessible to send from, only the owner of the Listserv can remove the address from the subscription list.  To attempt to contact the Listserv owner, send an email to: listname[email protected].

Viewing the archives for a listserv

Some listservs are set up by the owner to archive postings. Access to those archives is controlled by the list owner.

There are two types of archives: Web Archive and Notebook Archive

To view a web archive:

  • For listserv postings sent and archived on or after 2/1/08
    • The listserv has to be set up to web archive
    • You must meet the access criteria set up by the list owner in order to view the web archives
    • Depending on the access settings, you may need to log into the listserv web interface to view the archives
      • Select Login Required
      • Select Get a new LISTSERV password. Your login id is the email address you used to subscribe to the listserv
      • Select a password
      • Enter Register Password

To view a notebook archive:

  • To see the list of all the notebook archives available for a listserv
    • send an email to: [email protected]
    • Leave the subject line blank
    • In the body type: indexlistname
      Note: listname=the name of your listserv
    • The listserv server will email to you a list of the available notebook archives for that listserv
  • To retrieve a notebook archive for a listserv
    • send an email to: [email protected]
    • Leave the subject line blank
    • In the body type: getlistname logyrmo
      Note: listname=the name of your listserv
      and yrmo=the 2-digit year and 2-digit month of the archive you wish to view
      Example: get admin-l log0310 will get you the archives for October 2003
    • You can request multiple logs by hitting return and entering another log request on the next line of the email
    • The listserv server will send you one email for each notebook request. The email will contain all the postings sent to the listserv that particular month, in the order they were sent.
