Scheduled Maintenance:Postponed Disabling the SMB1 Protocol

Status Type

Scheduled Maintenance

Date and Time

Friday, March 1, 2019 - 09:08 to Friday, March 29, 2019 - 18:08

Reason

Due to the feedback we received that disabling the SMB1 protocol on our Active Directory domain controllers will result in significant disruptions to enterprise functions, we will be postponing this action for 1 month.

SMB1 is an old version of the Server Message Block protocol that Windows uses for file sharing on a local network; it’s been replaced by SMBv2 and SMBv3.

Impact

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

  • We strongly recommend that departments currently allowing this protocol take the necessary steps to disable it.
  • System application managers should contact their vendors for the necessary steps to upgrade to using the newer SMB2 and SMB3 versions of this protocol.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

To mitigate the impact to the organization, we will disable this protocol by domain starting on March 1, 2019.
