Windows 10 - End of Support

  • Author: Jerry Tung

  • Date:

Microsoft will cease providing support for its Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. In preparation, UCSF IT is beginning the transition to Windows 11 now. Please see the timeline of the transition plan for UCSF-managed and non-UCSF-managed computers below.

UCSF-managed computers
Starting July 2024: All new/reimaged computers will be imaged with Windows 11.
Starting August 2024:
  • We will deploy Windows 11 upgrades in small increments until all UCSF-managed computers have been updated.
  • If you would like to upgrade now to Windows 11 or have any software/hardware that is not compatible with Windows 11, please open a ticket.

‌We encourage you to consider the following options and take appropriate action by October 2024:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11: If your current computer meets the minimum requirements for Windows 11, we recommend upgrading to the latest operating system. The minimum requirements for Windows 11 at UCSF are as follows:
    • Processor: Intel 8th Gen CPU or higher.
    • Graphics Card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.
    • RAM: 8 gigabytes (GB).
    • Hard Drive: 256 GB - (20GB - Free Space).
    • TPM: Must have TPM Version 2.0.
    • Hardware: Computers should not be older than 5 years old.
  • Purchase a Windows 11 License from a vendor: Licensing options are available through Dell ([email protected]) or retail stores such as Office Depot, Best Buy, Staples, etc.
  • Computer replacement: If your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, we recommend purchasing a new system that supports or comes with Windows 11. This will ensure compatibility and security for your work at UCSF.
  • Incompatible software/peripherals: If you cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to incompatible software or peripherals, we advise taking the following steps:
    • Contact the software or peripheral vendor to inquire about an updated version that supports Windows 11. Upgrade both the application and the operating system accordingly.
    • If upgrading is not feasible, remove the computer from the network and use it offline. Ensure that sensitive data is appropriately protected.

‌If none of the above options are applicable, submit a Security Exception request by October 2025. Our team will assess the situation and provide guidance accordingly.
