Apr 2024: Free Baby Grand Piano Scam
Threat Alert: Free Baby Piano Scam
- This campaign starts with a benign email informing the recipient of an opportunity to acquire a “free” piano.
- The recipient is directed to contact the purported piano owner, when they will receive a reference number and additional contact info for a moving company to arrange for piano delivery for a fee. Pictures of the supposed piano are shared with the inquirer upon request.
- Once in touch with the purported moving company, the victim is directed to make a payment of $400 - $900 via Zelle, Bitcoin, or CashApp.
Key Action: Report Suspicious Emails
- Remain alert to phishing indicators. Mismatches between sending addresses and an organization’s name are always warning signs, as are mismatches between an apparent sending address and the reply-to address.
- Verify the legitimacy of any unsolicited/unexpected email before you interact with it. It can be tempting to quickly act on too good to be true offers. Additionally, be cautious of any cryptocurrency-based payment requests, as these are often fraudulent.
- Report ANY suspicious emails using the Phish Alarm button.
