End of Support: macOS Monterey 12.x

Support Ending on November 1, 2024

UCSF IT is phasing out support for macOS Monterey (12.x) as it no longer complies with UCSF's minimum-security standards on security maintenance.  For additional details about UCSF's minimum-security standards, visit https://tiny.ucsf.edu/mss.

What's happening?

Following Apple's release of macOS Sonoma (14.x) last year, we anticipate that Apple will discontinue security maintenance of macOS Monterey (12.x) after November 2024, requiring UCSF IT to end support of macOS Monterey (12.x) at UCSF.

Vendors of some of our standard software, such as CrashPlan, Microsoft 365, and Symantec Endpoint Protection, will eventually discontinue their support of macOS Monterey (12.x) as well.

What do I need to do?

For us to continue providing official support for your Mac computer on and after November 2024, we advise you to select one of the options listed below:

  • If you have an ITFS-supported computer still running a discontinued version of macOS, please open an IT ticket to request to upgrade: https://ucsf.service-now.com/ess/get_it_help.do.
    • For "Type of Help", select the option Computer, Software, Mobile Devices and Printers
  • If you have a computer that is not supported by or subscribed with ITFS, or if you are unsure, please consult one of the following options:
    • If your computer is running UCSF IT Security Suite, please visit this web page for special instructions to follow before upgrading macOS: https://wiki.library.ucsf.edu/x/nSnPHQ (VPN is required to view the link if not on UCSF's network)
    • To request technical assistance on ensuring your macOS upgrade is successful, you may open an IT ticket on our website at https://ucsf.service-now.com/ess/get_it_help.do.
      • For "Type of Help", select the option Computer, Software, Mobile Devices and Printers
    • If your computer is unusable and requires immediate service, you may call our IT Service Desk at (415) 514-4100 to request an IT field technician to help you onsite at UCSF.
  • Please note that ITFS may charge an hourly rate to assist users that are not subscribed to any desktop support services from ITFS.

What happens if I don't upgrade to a supported macOS version?

If you do not upgrade to a supported macOS version, it will render your computer to become unsupportable. This will limit our ability to help you due to the following reasons:

  • Your computer will no longer receive security patches or functionality updates for legacy versions of macOS, which renders it out of compliance with UCSF's minimum-security standards.
  • Your computer will no longer receive security software upgrades when newer versions aren't programmed to work with legacy versions of macOS, which renders it out of compliance with UCSF's minimum-security standards.
  • Your computer will no longer receive productivity software upgrades when the respective software vendors stop supporting older macOS versions, which prevents our IT engineering and IT support teams from troubleshooting major software issues or distribute new software features while your computer is running a legacy version of macOS.
