Nov 2024: BLACK FRIDAY THEMED Smishing Messages Lead to Malicious Sites
Threat Alert: BLACK FRIDAY THEMED Smishing Messages Lead to Malicious Sites
- Numerous SMS phishing (smishing) messages are using Black Friday-themed lures in the runup to the holiday shopping season.
- The lures are varied in composition; however, they all promise either gift cards for major realtors or other Black Friday promotions.
- Realtors mentioned in the lures include Walmart and Amazon.
- Recipients are encouraged to follow an included link, which ultimately leads to malicious sites.
- These sites may sell fake products, steal credentials or financial information, or lead to malicious software (malware).
Key Action: Report Suspicious Emails
- Do not engage with unusual or suspicious text messages. Don’t click unknown links, download new apps or files, or reply to unknown senders.
- Report spam and suspicious text messages. Use the spam reporting feature in your messaging app. (Processes vary based on your device and wireless service provider.) Forwarding suspicious text messages to 7726 (which spells “SPAM” on a traditional English keypad) is also an option in many countries. By reporting, you help providers identify and reduce spam.
- Remember that cybercriminals commonly leverage current events in attacks. Annual events like Black Friday give cybercriminals time to prepare.
- Report ANY suspicious emails using the Phish Alarm button.
