Ensuring Digital Accessibility: New ADA Title II Compliance Rule

Dear UCSF Community,

Last year the Department of Justice finalized a rule under Title II of the ADA that requires all digital materials—including websites, web and mobile applications, digital documents (PDFs, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations), videos, audio recordings, social media, and course content—be accessible to people with disabilities. The deadline for compliance is April 24, 2026.

UCSF is committed to protecting the civil rights of every individual and fostering a culture of full inclusion and belonging. We aim to ensure that everyone can access, benefit from, and contribute to our digital information, programs, and services. This new ruling affirms the importance of our ongoing efforts, and we ask all members of our community to prioritize accessibility when creating materials that may be shared electronically.

To meet the compliance deadline, all digital assets must adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards

  • Website owners, content creators, and anyone producing digital materials are responsible for ensuring compliance by April 2026.
  • All digital assets must meet these standards and maintain accessibility thereafter.

We encourage you to visit the Digital Accessibility Compliance Project webpage for tools and resources to help you create and maintain accessible digital content. You can also attend a Live Help Session or request a Digital Accessibility Consultation. (Note: MyAccess Log-in required for Live Help and consultation requests.)

Thank you for your commitment to excellence, inclusion, and belonging.

Sincerely,
