Microsoft Windows 7 has reached the End of Life and is no longer supported. Microsoft offered Extended Support for three years which expired on January 14, 2023.

What will happen to Windows 7 systems at UCSF after January 14, 2023?

Microsoft no longer provides security patches and your system is vulnerable.

We will be blocking Windows 7 systems from the UCSF network on April 17 2023. 

Please file for a Security Exception to see if the system is eligible. Submit a Security Exception.

What are my options if I have a system running Windows 7?

  • Upgrade your current system to Windows 10 if it meets the minimum requirements:
    • UCSF Windows 10 Minimum Requirements
      • Processor: 2 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or Soc
      • RAM: 8 gigabyte (GB)
      • Hard Drive: 256 GB
      • Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
      • System should not be older than 5 years old. 
    • If your system is managed by ITFS or a Medical Center System, please click here to open a ticket to request an OS upgrade for your system.
    • If your system is a personally owned device (BYOD), you will need to purchase a Windows 10 - Professional License key from a vendor.  
  • If your system doesn't meet the minimum requirements
    • Please purchase a new system that supports at least Windows 10. 
  • If you cannot upgrade because you have software/peripherals that is not compatible with Windows 10:
    • Contact the vendor for an updated version that supports Windows 10 and upgrade the application and OS. 
    • Remove the system from the network and use it offline. 
    • File a security exception.
