Description

The OneTrust cookie consent platform provides a tool designed to give website visitors transparency by notifying them of the cookies being used on a website. Cookies are small text files that are placed on browsers such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari, and they store data about the user for various reasons, from preferences to web activity. Cookies are also used by various tools such as data visualization widgets, web analytics, and video platforms. Once the OneTrust tool is installed on a site, new visitors to the website will see a pop-up banner on the first page they visit within the site. It usually shows up on the bottom of the screen and notifies them of the use of cookies. The website visitor then has the option to make their preferences for the different types of cookies used on the website.

Why is this important?

The cookie consent platform is a step in our website visitor's control over personal data and compliance with privacy laws.

How does it work?

A small javascript is placed on the template of a website. This javascript is responsible for showing the cookie consent banner and communicating the visitor's consent to the OneTrust server. Subsequent visits from the same user will be remembered by OneTrust and they will not be presented with the banner until their preference expires.

If a web visitor chooses to accept cookies such as analytics cookies, the analytics platform allows the cookie to collect data. If the web visitor rejects cookies, OneTrust will restrict the cookies and the analytics platform will not collect data.

If cookies are rejected by the visitor, it may effect the user experience on the webpage if those cookies are restricted from firing by the OneTrust cookie banner. It is important to understand what tools or platforms you are placing on your website and which cookies are being used in association with these tools as these cookies can potentially be collecting data from the website visitors. If a visitor chooses to reject cookies, those tools may not appear on the page as it normally would.
