Updated workstation security helps keep UCSF computers secure and reliable

To help keep UCSF-managed computers secure, reliable, and easier to support, UCSF IT is updating how administrative access is managed on some Windows workstations. These changes reduce unnecessary administrator privileges while preserving the ability to complete everyday work.
Between July 13 and July 31, IT will update a subset of UCSF-managed Windows computers that currently have administrator permissions beyond what is needed for routine work. Removing unnecessary elevated access helps protect both institutional and personal data from security threats.
Most employees should notice little or no change in their day-to-day work. You will continue to use standard enterprise applications and approved software as you do today. When elevated permissions are needed for an approved business purpose, they can be requested through a secure, temporary process rather than permanent administrator access.
If your work requires administrative access that cannot be accommodated through the standard process, UCSF IT will review exception requests on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the IT Service Desk at 415-514‑4100 or chat online at help.ucsf.edu.
For questions about this change, please contact John Chin, director, IT Customer Experience, at [email protected].
These changes are part of UCSF's ongoing commitment to protecting institutional data while ensuring employees have the tools they need to do their work efficiently. Thank you for your partnership in helping maintain a secure computing environment.
If there are situations where an exception may truly be required, please contact the IT Service Desk at 415-514‑4100 or chat online at help.ucsf.edu.
