Can I use OneNote on my Mac?

OneNote is part of the Microsoft 365 suite for Macs.

I just exited a new notebook by closing the browser tab, but I don’t see my file listed in OneNote.

It may take 30 to 45 seconds for a file to appear in your lists after you have created it.

I got an error message when uploading and opening OneNote files created on desktop using OneNote 2016.

OneNote online uses a specific file format, and OneNote 2019 is the desktop version that matches the correct file format. If you are using OneNote 2016, the only option at this time is to copy and paste from the desktop file into an online OneNote document.
