Overview
Slack is an optional messaging tool and collaboration platform designed to support natural teamwork, allowing you to collaborate online as effectively as you do face-to-face. It is available to UCSF employees and learners but should not be used to share restricted data. Please coordinate with your department to establish communication best practices for applications.
How to access
Accessing Slack for the first time
- To request a Slack license, submit a Slack License Form.
- Go to https://ucsf.enterprise.slack.com/ to sign in.
- Enter your UCSF email address and password in the login screen.
- Select the workspaces that you would like to join.
- To access a Slack Workspace on your desktop, download Slack for Mac or Windows, and select the Launch in Slack option next to the workspaces that you would like to access on Slack desktop.
NOTE: Slack should not be used to share restricted data. See Requirements and Limitations below.
Description
Slack is a workstream collaboration tool that supports group communication and collaboration. Slack is organized into group communications spaces called channels, which are persistent and searchable. Slack is also integrated with other tools you use, such as Box and Zoom.

Requirements and Limitations
Slack is only allowed for P1 and P2 data—it is NOT approved for sensitive (P3) and restricted (P4) data including Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Learn more about the UCSF Data Classification Types.
