Overview

Slack is an optional messaging tool and collaboration platform designed to support natural teamwork, allowing you to collaborate online as effectively as you do face-to-face. It is available to UCSF employees and learners but should not be used to share restricted data. Please coordinate with your department to establish communication best practices for applications.

Slack Workspaces

The following Slack Workspaces are currently available within the UCSF enterprise:

  • Open Workspaces (you may join by pressing the Join and Launch Slack button underneath the workplace title):
    • Health - Health employees who collaborate with others
    • Research - Non-clinical lab scientists and staff
    • Education - Faculty, campus staff, and learners

Slack Channels

Slack organizes conversations within your Workspace into designated spaces called Channels, bringing people and information together for a common purpose – like a specific project, topic, or team.

All members (but not guests) can browse and join public channels in their workspace. For a private channel, you must be added to it by a member of that channel.

Requirements and Limitations

Remember, Slack is only allowed for P1 and P2 data—it is NOT approved for sensitive (P3) and restricted (P4) data, including Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Learn more about the UCSF Data Classification Types
