Last Updated: February 2026

This page outlines upcoming application changes in the RAE environment, key timelines, and recommended alternatives to ensure continuity of research operations.

Azure Data Studio – Retirement & Removal

Microsoft is retiring Azure Data Studio effective February 28, 2026.

To align with this timeline, Azure Data Studio will be removed from the RAE environment on March 30, 2026.

Recommended alternatives:

  • Visual Studio Code
  • SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

We encourage users to begin transitioning to one of these supported tools as soon as possible.

Atlas.ti – License Expiration & Transition

The current RAE-managed Atlas.ti license expires on April 7, 2026.

To renew the license, Atlas.ti needs to complete a required Security Risk Assessment with RAE and UCSF Data Security teams. Atlas.ti has declined to participate in this process. As a result, RAE is unable to renew its license.

Key points:

  • The RAE-managed Atlas.ti license will expire on April 7, 2026.
  • Atlas.ti 9 will remain installed temporarily.
  • Users who wish to continue using Atlas.ti in RAE must provide their own license.
  • Full removal from RAE will occur after the transition period.

We strongly recommend evaluating alternative platforms as soon as possible.
