If you use Linux and prefer a desktop email application to the excellent Outlook webmail client then you have a new option. Gnome Evolution with Exchange Web Services support (evolution-ews) version 3.27.91 and later support OAuth2, which means you can connect Evolution to Exchange Online (UCSF's email service). Install Evolution with EWS support from your favorite application source.

This documentation is provided without support, but it has been tested successfully with Evolution 3.44.4-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS.

  1. Open Evolution
  2. Select File>New>Mail Account, then click Next

  3. Enter your name and UCSF email address, uncheck Look up mail server details..., then click Next

  4. Change Server Type to Exchange Web Services

  5. Enter your UCSF email address as your username
  6. Enter https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx as the Host URL

  7. Change the Authentication type to OAuth2 (Office365)

  8. Check Override Office365 OAuth2 settings and confirm that the Application ID is 20460e5d-ce91-49af-a3a5-70b6be7486d1 and the Tenant ID is common.

  9. Click the Fetch URL, which will ask for the password and, if successful, it'll fill the OAB URL field

  10. Complete the rest of the steps in the account setup wizard as you see fit.
